I reluctantly wake in soft sheets as I’m shaken into reality. I debate letting sleep overcome me again until I hear her voice. “No, I’m okay, thank you, though.”

“You really should eat, Hadley.”

“I’m not hungry. Thank you again, Lilly.”

“All right, sweetie. I’m going to go pick up some clothing for you with Isla. We’ll be back shortly.”

“Okay,” she says, and I can hear agony lacing her words.

I think I drift off again because when I finally force my eyes open, and I’m able to turn my head to where my shot of whiskey is lying on her side facing me with her hands under her head and her eyes closed. She’s stunning. Something radiates from within her, making her irresistible to me. She’s unaware of how much she affects me, and waking up to the sight of her is something that I could get used to.

I reach out and run my fingers over her flawless cheek. Her softened features scrunch as her eyes flutter open.

“Whiskey.” There’s a softness to her voice, a hesitation in her body movements. I can tell that she wants to touch me or jump into my arms but she doesn’t reach for me.

“Rye.”

“How are you feeling?”

“I’m hanging in there. I’m stiff, but whatever she gave me helped me a lot.”

She sighs in relief. “You scared me last night. I’ve been overly concerned for hours. You wouldn’t wake up, and I just . . .” She fights to hold back her emotion. “I just wanted you to open your eyes and hear you tell me that you loved me.”

The corners of my lips angle upward. “You’re rather emotional, Hads, and I love you.”

“You do this to me, damn it,” she complains as she wipes at her weeping eyes angrily. “I can’t explain what I feel for you, but it’s—it’s like you give me something that no one else can.”

“Come here, Hadley. I’ll give you everything that you want.”

She shakes her head and refuses to move closer to me. “Hadley,” I state, “get that gorgeous ass over here. Now.”

“I’ll hurt you again.”

“You haven’t hurt me and you won’t. I need to touch you.”

“Madelyn said that you pushed yourself too hard yesterday, and that’s why you experienced all of that pain last night.”

“Fuck what she said. Hadley, if you don’t move into my arms, I will send Jacobs a message and have him physically move you closer to me.”

That gets a smile out of her, and she squirms closer to me.

“Whiskey?”

“Yes?”

She lies on her side and rests her head on my shoulder. “I think that you’ve spun me into glass.”

“You’ve always been fragile, Rye. You just haven’t seen exactly how vulnerable you are until I made you see it.”

“Possibly,” she grumbles. “Oh, Dr. Heath will be here soon. Madelyn called him to inform him of the night you had. I think she may have a little crush on you.”

I think this is Hadley telling me that she’s jealous, but I don’t push her on the subject. “It’s a damn good thing that she knows that we’re together then.
